The International Women's Day 2019: #BalanceforBetter

The International Women's Day 2019 campaign theme of #BalanceforBetter is a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world.

The movement dates as far back as 1909 but the United Nations didn't adopt it until 1975. It's celebrated in some countries and a public holiday is given while it's completely ignored in some others.

It's been discovered that only 23% of legislators all over the world are women while the percentage is much lower in Nigeria. And this is what this year's theme tends to highlight.

Several organizations in Nigeria alone have joined the band wagon to create an awareness for equality in work places and government in particular and many politicians have taken to Twitter to show their support which is a good thing.

But it shouldn't just end here. If anything should be done, it's a legal decree which will state that a minimum of one in every three legislators should be woman which will give more women the chance to run for political offices.

It might be a long shot in a country like ours but with the revolution gently and steadily brewing in the political scene in Nigeria with the passing of the #NotTooYoungToRule bill, changes are on the way and we will surely get there sooner than later.

Don't forget to play your part.
